portland triathlon

i had lots of fun completing the olympic-distance tri in portland last sunday. my mom, prepping for her big competition at age-group world’s next month in New Zealand, also came up for the race. we got to swim in the Willamette River, and while it felt like a long swim, i enjoyed my first river swim in a triathlon, swimming upstream and then downstream under the cathedral-like arches of the St. John’s bridge. the bike course was pretty flat (after a steep climb out of T1) along the urban streets of NE portland. the run was also fairly flat (after that same steep two-block climb out of T2) and we ran by the University of Portland, did our last mile on the St. John’s bridge (pictured) and thenImage downhill towards the finish line in Cathedral Park. given that i haven’t been focused on TRI training, but rather on long, slow, ten-minute mile runs in preparation for the Portland marathon in a couple weeks, I was happy with my finish and esp. with my ability to run a tempo 10K in 46:40. lots of fun!
